Topic: Using Photoshop to Analyse Microscope and Scanner Photos of Questioned Documents

Speaker: Dr. James Kelley

Abstract

This lecture presents Photoshop techniques that provide another layer of analysis for questioned documents. This extra analysis can produce indicative and/or probative evidence that augments handwriting analysis and yields higher certainty in an opinion. Certain types of photo scanners and microscopes can be used to make high resolution photos that can be analysed in detail with Photoshop. The applicable SWGDOC Standard Guides will be discussed.

Bio:

I have a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from The University of California Santa Barbara. I have been doing document examinations since 2012. My engineering background is well suited for document examination using computer graphics software to analyze photoscanner and microscope photos of document similar to type of forensic analysis done by Purdue University’ Department of Electrical Engineering. My lectures have been focusing on presenting procedures for analysis of documents where the examinations must be done in offices using portable instruments.
